A Tulsa man was arrested in Skiatook early Friday after police say he attacked his ex-girlfriend while she was holding a child. Timmy Barnes, 37, was booked into Tulsa County Jail on felony child abuse and two counts of domestic assault and battery.

According to an arrest report, police were called to the 200 block of East Beech Street at about 1:30 a.m. A woman told them her ex-boyfriend became angry when she received text messages and phone calls from another man while he was at her house.

The woman told police she has a lot of male friends because women friends "have too much drama."

The woman said she was holding her toddler son and cell phone when Barnes became angry and tried to grab the phone from her hands. He knocked the boy to the ground, injuring him, the arrest report states.

"Timmy then proceeded to hold her down and strangle her," the arresting officer said in his report.

Police say the victim had a busted lip and a red mark on her neck. The toddler had a bloody nose.

Police stopped Barnes in a nearby church parking lot and placed him under arrest for domestic assault and battery in the presence of a minor, assault and battery by strangulation and child abuse.

Barnes's mother, Sandra Barnes, who says she witnessed the incident, tells News On 6 the police report is inaccurate.

She said her son would never intentionally hurt a child. He was just reacting to the fact that the woman had broken his vehicle's window with her cell phone, she said, and was trying to keep her from doing more damage.
