Oklahoma State 58, Iowa State 27: By The Numbers

Posted: Updated:
AMES, Iowa -

Oklahoma State became bowl eligible and stayed very-much alive in the conference title race on Saturday with a thorough 58-27 handling of Iowa State at Jack Trice Stadium. Here are some of the numbers that stood out in the victory:

219 – Desmond Roland finally got his chance in the starting lineup and he more than took advantage of the opportunity. Roland ran with purpose and attacked the Cyclones, rolling his way to a career-high 219 yards and four touchdowns on 8.4 yards per carry. It marked the first time an OSU back has eclipsed the 200-yard mark since Kendall Hunter had 201 against Nebraska in 2010.

58 – Roland's longest carry of the day was a dazzling 58-yarder where he shook off four would-be tacklers on his way to the end zone in the third quarter. It marked OSU's longest rush of the season.

78 – It's a good thing the ground game was working because the Cowboys weren't finding any success through the air. Clint Chelf followed up his 10-for-25 performance against TCU with a 10-of-26 outing against the Cyclones for just 78 yards. The swirling winds in Ames no doubt played a factor, but it was still an eyebrow-raising showing after reclaiming the starting gig.

85 – It wasn't all bad for Chelf. The senior quarterback took advantage of the spread-out Cyclone defense, carving his way for 85 yards on just nine attempts, highlighted by a 32-yarder.

96 – That was OSU's national rank in rushing offense entering the game out of 125 teams. But with a shakeup in the backfield with Chelf at QB and Roland in the backfield, the Cowboys ran for 342 yards on 7.3 yards per carry. They entered the game averaging just 136.5 yards on 3.9 per carry.

2 – The Oklahoma State defense continued to prove itself on Saturday, particularly in its knack for creating turnovers. The Cowboys entered the game ranked 18th nationally in turnovers forced and added to that positive trend with three more takeaways against ISU. Making that even better was that the Pokes returned two of those miscues for touchdowns. Justin Gilbert returned an interception for a 31-yard score in the first quarter and defensive end Tyler Johnson had a 54-yard TD on a fumble recovery in the third.

2006 – The last time Oklahoma State had two defensive scores in a game was in a 66-24 thrashing of Baylor on Nov. 11, 2006.

8 – With the victory on Saturday, OSU became bowl eligible for a school record eighth-straight season.

6 – With his 31-yard interception return for a touchdown, cornerback Justin Gilbert recorded the first defensive TD of his career. However, he has an impressive six non-offensive touchdowns thanks to five career kickoff return scores.

4 – Oklahoma State scored 21 points in the first quarter, marking the fourth time this season the Cowboys have hit the 21-point mark in a single period.

37 – OSU's run defense has been a point of pride for the team this season and entered Saturday ranked 20th nationally, surrendering 117 yards a game. Iowa State had exactly 117 at halftime against OSU and was having consistent success with the zone read, but OSU made adjustments at halftime and limited the Cyclones to just 37 yards on the ground in the second half.

29 – OSU's nation-leading streak of scoring at least one touchdown in two minutes or less is still alive and well. The Cowboys have now accomplished the feat in 29-straight games and have done it in 45 of its past 46 games.
