TULSA, Oklahoma -

A Tulsa woman is on a crusade to keep families safe from harmful household chemicals.

She was one of the moms who marched on Washington with their strollers in tow. Linda Modenbach said some common cleaners, even the stuff in your carpet, can be harmful to you and your kids.

Her trip was about a new law on the table that could change regulations on these chemicals.

The moms want lawmakers to update a 37-year-old federal law that regulates toxic substances.

"It was an exciting time. I had not done that, and it was--to see that many people coming from so many different places," Modenbach said.

Modenbach is a retired special education teacher. She went to D.C., along with her family and other moms, health professionals and educators to put pressure on Congress to beef up The Chemical Safety Improvement Act, after studies have linked some chemicals to learning disabilities.

Groups like Modenbach's "stroller brigade" want the Environmental Protection Agency to closely study risk groups, like women and children, and allow states to regulate the use of dangerous chemicals in products like soaps, cleaners, and even the containers you drink out of.

Modenbach said her group has received grants to help educate Oklahoma families on how to avoid potential toxins. She encourages families to switch to non-toxic cleaning and personal care products.

"It's so important, not only our children, but our children's children," Modenbach said.

The bill the "stroller brigade" is lobbying for is still in committee and has to go a long way before becoming law.
