CHICKASHA, Oklahoma -

What started out as an office weight loss program at the Chickasha Police Department has expanded into an annual community event.

Biggest Loser Chickasha will once again kick off in January to motivate hundreds of residents to shed the pounds and get active.

"People want to do this, people want to become active and they want to lose weight," said Major Elip Moore with the Chickasha Police Department, who heads up the program. "This just gives them a vehicle and a support system."

The event began four years ago with roughly 47 participants and seven to eight teams. Last year, 43 teams and 600 people took part.

"We've lost 8,300 pounds as a community, over four tons of weight," said Moore.

The program begins in January and last six months. During that time, teams will participate in monthly challenges, everything from walking for an hour to hiking up a mountain.

"Obviously some people can't participate in all of them because some of them are a little bit more physical than others," said Moore. "But, for the most part, most of our contestants can compete and be involved in these different challenges."

The contest ends in June and the top three people who lose the most body weight will win prizes including a 7-night cruise and/or trips to Cancun and Branson, Missouri.

"It's not about winning the grand prize," said Moore. "If the worst thing that happens is that you diet and exercise for six months and you lose weight, if that's the worst thing that happens to you, you're still a winner in my opinion."

The goal next year is to break 10,000 pounds of weight loss. If you live in the area of Chickasha and want to sign up, just go to the B.l. Chickasha Facebook page for more information or you can email your entry questions to blchickasha@gmail.com. The entry fee is $20.
