TULSA, Oklahoma -

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a house fire that killed an elderly Tulsa woman Sunday morning.

Tulsa Fire Department Captain Stan May said the call came in around 3:30 a.m. of a house fire in the 2700 block of North St. Louis.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames and smoke coming from the roof. They were told a woman was inside. Her nephew, who lives across the street, had tried to rescue her, but was driven back by the flames, May said.

Inside the house, firefighters found the woman dead. The victim has only been identified as a woman in her late-70s or 80s.

It took about 25 minutes to get the fire under control, according to TFD.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but May said a resident told firefighters they had been using a space heater.

"If you're going to use a space heater to help you get through this cold snap, make sure that it's up to date and that you keep it at least three feet away from all combustibles," May said.

He said, already this year, TFD has responded to several fires caused by space heaters.
