Ice Changing Over To Snow, Wintry Mix In Green Country

TULSA, Oklahoma -

Ice has blanketed most of Oklahoma, providing travel issues and causing power crews to work around the clock. As evening settles in on Saturday, colder air will be spreading across the state and the precipitation will be changing over to snow, News On 6 meteorologist Dick Faurot said.

"There will also be a dry slot working in bringing much of the precipitation to an end and limiting the potential accumulations," Faurot wrote in his weather blog. "The Interstate 44 corridor will be on the fringe the way things look now, with a dusting to perhaps an inch and several inches more likely further northwest and into Kansas."

Light snow is expected in areas northwest of Tulsa, with a wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, and a little snow along the I-44 corridor. More showers will rain down on southeastern Oklahoma. Additional icing should be light.

Since soil temperatures are remaining above freezing, the ice has been an issue more so for elevated surfaces like power lines, trees and bridges. But Faurot said that might change as temperatures are expected to drop Saturday night.

"So far the roads have just been wet," Faurot said. "But as the precipitation comes to an end and temperatures drop into the mid 20s, those wet surfaces will become icy surfaces creating greater travel problems for the first hours of the morning on Sunday."

Thousands of Green County residents are without electricity as ice-covered limbs affect power lines in Northeastern Oklahoma.

Faurot said it is difficult to measure the official precipitation so far because of the freezing temperatures.

However, with so much moisture already on the roads and ice on elevated surfaces along with falling temps, the impacts of the storm may worsen somewhat overnight into Sunday morning.
