Tulsa Women Round Up Thundering Herd

Posted: Updated:
HUNTINGTON, West Virgina -

Ashley Clark earned her third career double-double to lead Tulsa to an 80-62 win over Marshall on Saturday night at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W.Va. TU moved to 9-7 on the season and 3-2 in Conference USA, while the Thundering Herd fell to 7-11 overall and 0-5 in the league.

"When you hit a shot and another and another, you think you are good shooters, and that is part of what shooting the ball is about, thinking you are good and that your shots will go in," coach Matilda Mossman said. "It was fun watching us score points and watching us get a good lead. It is so much more fun to play with a lead than to try to come from behind."

Clark had 14 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals in 36 minutes of play, while shooting 50 percent from the field. Kelsee Grovey had a team-high and ties her career-best of 20 points, Kadan Brady added 13 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Loren McDaniel scored 10.

Tulsa jumped out to an 18-7 lead with 15:05 on the clock in the first half, as TU was 4-for-4 from three-point range and shooting a very solid 77 percent from the field. The Golden Hurricane then climbed to a first-half best, 16-point lead twice – 23-7 at 13:24 and 36-20 at 7:47, but the Thundering Herd inched back and pulled to within four points, 40-36, with 2:17 to play. Tulsa hit the final four points to take an eight-point advantage, 44-36, into the break.

In the second frame, TU continued to inch ahead and climbed to a game-high 20-point lead with 3:26 left in the contest and earned an 18-point victory (80-62).

The Golden Hurricane shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and 46 percent in the second for 48 percent in the contest. TU was also 50 percent from behind the arc, while hitting 4-of-7 from the charity stripe.

Marshall, which shot just 31-percent in the contest, including 25 percent from 3-point range, was led by Suporia Dickens who came in off the bench and scored 21 points. Leah Scott and AJ Johnson also scored in double figures off the bench with 10 points apiece.

Seventeen of the Thundering Herd's points were scored from the charity stripe as the team shot 81-percent (17-of-21).

Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday against North Texas. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Denton, Texas.
