TULSA, Oklahoma -

Tulsa Republican Joy Hofmeister officially announced she is running for state Superintendent of Schools Monday morning.

Hofmeister owns a Kumon Learning Center in Tulsa and is a former member of the Oklahoma Board of Education.

She resigned last spring after a conflict with current superintendent Janet Barresi, who is running for re-election and is also Republican.

Hofmeister described Barresi as a dictator trying to centralize control of education.

"We have a lot of work to do and I am ready to lead, listen, limit government and restore local control," said Joy Hofmeister.

"The problem is that Janet Barresi has centralized education in Oklahoma and turned the State Department of Education into a dictatorship. Centralization doesn't work in the economy, and it doesn't work in education. Centralization is nothing but socialism. Bureaucrats on Lincoln Boulevard should quit trying to dictate to parents."

The election for Oklahoma School Superintendent is this fall.
