Bonds Proposed For Mid-Del School Security

MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma -

Currently only Epperly Heights is equipped with security camera and a security entrance, but there's a bond issue that could put the same technology in all 25 schools.

Across the metro, it was a snow day, which only means one thing for Mid-Del parent Anthony Carter's grocery bill.

"Aw lord it rises," Mid-Del parent Anthony Carter said.

Come February 11th, Carter's property tax could rise as well.

"I think if it works for the good, it should pass; it should take off," Carter added.

The good of the students is exactly why Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes would like to see the bonds pass.

"It's a constant concern for me as police chief," Clabes said.

So the Mid-Del school district is proposing a $10 Million bond and a $400,000 bond. The first bond would go toward security cameras, security entrances and key card access. The second bond would go to schools buses and music instruments.

"We are behind the curve when it comes to school security," said Clabes. "We are strongly encouraging our citizens to get out and vote yes."

But a yes vote won't come free. Homeowners in the district would pay a dollar more per week in property taxes based on a $100,000 home estimate. That comes out to about $4 a month, and it would just add to an existing $42 Million in bonds.

"I'll a little different about that, because people around here complain about that and they serious about that," Carter said.

If the district is serious...

"One of its most important bond issues in several years," Clabes said.

Then this father of three is all for voting yes on February 11th.

"If they're willing to make the change, I think it should make a big difference," Carter added.

While the main focus is on security, the bond issue also calls for one more shelter. This would give the district four total shelters.
