MOORE, Oklahoma -

Teachers, administrators, and parents at Plaza Towers Elementary in Moore came together to mark a milestone on Wednesday. They're leaving special notes on a beam that will be placed in the center of the new school.

Wednesday night was a celebration, a moment to mark a new beginning at the new Plaza Towers Elementary. The beam will be the heart of the school.

"Guys, we've come a long way. Seems like just yesterday that many of us were on this site," said Moore School Superintendent, Robert Romines.

Filled with emotion, Romines could barely finish his sentence. Wednesday evening marked a major step in the recovery and rebuilding of a school destroyed May 20.

"We always said that we were going to move forward, that we will never forget," said Romines. "This is one way of not forgetting."

"We see the beam as its way of trying to talk to the students that will come after us, and I think in a way, we're trying to reach out to those we lost," said Plaza Towers teacher, Pi Johnston.

The beam is the final piece to the new structure. More of a symbolic gesture as the school's faculty and staff continues to move forward.

"I signed right here," said Mikki Davis, who lost her 8-year-old son May 20.

"That's what killed my son was the debris and beam, and bricks and stuff, and it's very hard," said Davis.

But, Davis says this is for her son Kyle and the six other children who lost their lives at Plaza Towers.

"It's in his memory, and I don't want them to forget," said Davis. "I wrote something on there to God. Please keep this beam up, please don't let it fall and take a teachers life, a child's life, anybody's life."

"The beam looks strong, and you know, we're so looking forward to having a strong school with our family again, the kids that we love," said Johnston.

For them, the beam is a pillar that symbolizes a new beginning.

The new Plaza Towers Elementary is set to open in August. The final beam will be put in place next week.

Thursday, Briarwood Elementary teachers will sign their final beam, and celebrate the progress of their new school.
