Winter Storm Creates Dangerous Road Conditions Across Oklahoma

Another round of winter storm has brought snow and sleet to much of state on Sunday. Due to refreezing and additional snow and sleet overnight, hazardous road conditions have been reported across Oklahoma, and many schools have also canceled classes.

Wind Chill Advisory

Several Oklahoma counties, including Oklahoma County, Canadian County, and Cleveland County, are under a wind chill advisory until 10 a.m. Monday.

Officials say wind chills between 5 and 15 degrees below zero will be common. You are encouraged to wear extra layers to protect yourself from frostbite.

If you have to be outside, dress in layers and leave no skin exposed to the wind. frostbite and hypothermia can happen quickly.

Road Conditions

According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, Monday morning, roads and bridges remain slick and hazardous throughout northern, central, southern, southeastern, eastern and northeastern Oklahoma.

ODOT Crews are plowing snow and sleet accumulations and applying sand/salt to bridges and roadways.

Officials say travel is highly discouraged Monday morning, but if drivers are out on the roads, they need to remain cautious of black ice, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Roads in western and northwestern Oklahoma are slick in spots with blowing snow causing visibility issues in some areas, according to ODOT. Drivers in these areas are advised to remain cautious of black ice.

Drivers across the state are encouraged to use caution through the morning rush hour. ODOT crews say they are out in full force and will continue to apply materials to roads and bridges and plow accumulations throughout this morning.

During snow and/or ice conditions, motorists are asked to:

• Check road conditions before getting out on the roads.

• Stay at least 200 feet behind road-clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.

• Allow extra space between vehicles, so there is adequate distance for braking in wet and icy conditions.

• Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway, but is actually a thin layer of ice.

• Please be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time to reach destinations

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol told News 9 Monday morning that if you are driving the speed limit, you are driving too fast and will be ticketed.

Accidents

Emergency crews responded to multiple winter weather-related crashes across the Oklahoma City metro area Monday morning.

OHP officials say troopers responded to several accidents at the Dallas junction area.

Interstate 40 at the Arkansas state line on the eastbound side is closed due to a multi-vehicle collision involving two semi trucks and two other vehicles.

Bob Mills SkyNews 9 HD flew over the scene of a rollover wreck at I-240 and Air Depot. It's not blocking traffic. That driver is expected to be okay.

School Closings

Many schools across Oklahoma, including the Oklahoma City Public Schools, have also canceled classes on Monday, due to freezing temperatures and dangerous road conditions.

According to the OG&E, 2,768 customers in the Ardmore area are without power as of 8 a.m. Monday.

EMSA Updates

Since midnight Sunday to 10 a.m. Monday, EMSA paramedics have responded to 88 slips and falls, three cold exposure, one cardiac arrest outside as the patient was found in the snow, and 106 car crashes with injuries reported.
