Cooldown Brings Increasing Risk Of Severe Weather Sunday

TULSA, Oklahoma -

A change in the weather -- including a possible frost or freeze -- is in the forecast after a taste of summer.

The ride actually began Saturday when temperatures soared into the mid-90s in western Oklahoma, Grogan said. Two days from now, he said, those same locations could be covered in a dusting of snow.

Green Country is under the threat of severe weather for Sunday afternoon and evening ahead of a cold front expected to roll into the area.

"A powerful storm system is allowing the key ingredients of moisture, instability, and wind shear to create the threat for supercell thunderstorms capable of large hail, high winds and a few tornadoes," News On 6 Meteorologist Mike Grogan said.

"Much-needed, but extremely heavy rainfall will likely occur in some areas too, which would create a flash flooding threat."

Due to the set-up for severe weather on Sunday afternoon, the Storm Prediction Center has posted a moderate threat of severe weather, centered over eastern Oklahoma.

"This is the highest risk we've seen all year so far," Grogan said.

Saturday will be cloudy, windy and warm as the spring-like weather continues. There are fire danger concerns with gusty winds up to 30 mph or more during the day.

A significant cool down is expected for Monday and Tuesday. There may even be some wintry precipitation in the northwest corner of the state to start the work week.
