RedHawks Drop Series Finale To Nashville

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

The Nashville Sounds hit three home runs in an 8-5 win against the Oklahoma City RedHawks Sunday afternoon in the series finale between the two teams at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The RedHawks (13-11) scored first, but Nashville went on to build a 5-1 lead through five innings to win the series, 3-1.

Despite scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Oklahoma City suffered its first series loss of 2014, and first home series loss since June 23-25, 2013 against Omaha.

Oklahoma City connected on three hits in the first inning, and Gregorio Petit grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home Robbie Grossman for a 1-0 lead.

Nashville (12-11) tallied three unearned runs with two outs in the top of the fourth inning, including two on a home run by Jeremy Hermida, to take a 3-1 lead.

Back-to-back homers by Caleb Gindl and Hunter Morris to left field in the fifth inning put Nashville ahead, 5-1. The home runs brought Nashville's total to six homers in the last two games against the RedHawks.

Petit extended his hitting streak to eight games in the bottom of the sixth inning, connecting on a lead-off double. He later scored on a Domingo Santana single.

In the seventh inning, a sacrifice fly by Sean Halton to right field scored Irving Falu and Caleb Gindel scored on a throwing error by Jon Singleton on the play to extend Nashville out to 7-2 lead. The Sounds added another run in the eighth inning on a sac fly by Falu.

The RedHawks put together a three-run bottom of the eighth inning. Ronny Torreyes led off with his first home run of the season – a solo shot into the RedHawks bullpen in left field.

Max Stassi doubled later in the inning to center field to score Petit. Santana, who reached on a fielder's choice, was tagged out at home plate on the throw.

Kiké Hernandez followed with a RBI double to cut Nashville's lead to 8-5, but that was as close as Oklahoma City got as the RedHawks suffered a third straight loss for the first time this season.

Nashville outhit Oklahoma City, 14-10, led by a 4-for-4 performance by Taylor Green.

Sounds starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson (3-1) earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out six over seven innings.

RedHawks starter Bobby Doran (0-1) was charged with his first loss of the season, allowing five runs (two earned) on eight hits over five innings. He struck out one and did not issue a walk.

The RedHawks open a four-game series against Round Rock at 7:05 p.m. Monday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
