Summer means summer camp for thousands of Oklahoma young people. Now one group of those kids, who hadn't been able to enjoy summer camp, are getting their chance too.
Camp ClapHans is in its second-year at Norman's J.D. McCarty Center for Children with Developmental Disabilities. The camp stretches across five weeks, and serves five dozen kids with special needs, between the ages of 8 and 16.
Camp Director Kyle Cottrell says it's one of only two camps like it in the state.
"This is about new experiences 100 percent. A lot of our kids have never been in a canoe before," said Cottrell. "They've never been horseback riding before, and this is their first time, and it's so exciting being a part of that."
Camp ClapHans is named after the late Sammy Jack Claphan. Claphan was a member of the Cherokee Nation. He played football at OU, as well as the NFL. He also taught special education before he died in 2001.
