Walmart Rebate Helps Teachers Stretch Their Dollar

TULSA, Oklahoma -

It's not back to school time -- yet -- but it is time for back to school shopping to get started. Teachers are also stocking up for their classroom and this year, a special deal might help them save.

Teachers most always spend some of their own money to buy classroom supplies. They can take it off their taxes here in Oklahoma, but they also can stretch their dollar a little further with a 10 percent rebate that's being offered by Walmart for the next week.

Parents and teachers are making out those lists of school supplies they'll need for the next year. The list can get pretty long and expensive for parents, and for teachers, the list usually includes something they'll need for their own classroom.

Amanda Brown is a former teacher who says she spent $50 a month on supplies.

"Depends on whether you want your classroom to be nice and have new stuff," Brown said.

Now Walmart is offering teachers a discount on supplies they buy to stock up their classroom.

"They'll come in for school supplies, things to set up their classroom,” Walmart manager Tim Fields said. “They go online, fill out a form, and then within two weeks, we'll give them 10 percent of the purchase for the school supplies back."

The rebate comes as a Walmart gift card, so teachers can come back and buy more. It's the first time the chain has had a teacher appreciation week, and offered a rebate for about anything school related.

"Pretty much anything teachers would need to supply their children or set up the classroom,” Fields said. “We've got a corner set up with supplies, as well as the basics they'll use for the children in their class."

Now that she's no longer teacher, Brown is shopping for her own children, but she can appreciate anything that helps teachers.

"That's great. I used to be a teacher. I think that's fabulous," she said.

This discount is not connected to the sales tax holiday and doesn't overlap. The tax holiday is Aug. 1-3 and only applies to clothing.
