BROKEN ARROW, Oklahoma -

The City of Broken Arrow continues to ask businesses and residents to conserve water because of an algae problem at their new water treatment plant.

Officials say a high concentration of algae in the Verdigris River is clogging the plant's membrane filters.

City spokesperson Krista Flasch says Mondays are typically the highest usage day of the week. In addition, water usage has been higher than usual due to the hot weather. She says Broken Arrow hopes businesses and residents will continue to conserve water and limit any non-essential water usage such as outdoor water so water plant employees can focus on cleaning the membrane filters.

Flasch says workers are monitoring the situation and it is too early to say when the voluntary water restrictions will be lifted.  Adding, it will depend on water tower levels and the removal of the algae from the filters.
