Tulsa police kicked off weekend DUI stops across the city Friday in order to catch drunk drivers; and all area law enforcement are stepping up patrols through Monday.

The TPD said it issued 57 citations at the checkpoint, towed two vehicles and made one DUI arrest.

Police said that driver almost hit a police car at the checkpoint and didn't stop until he was chased down and arrested.

The citations were issued for things like not having insurance and not having children in car seats.

“We know people just want to have a good time and we don't want to take that away from anybody. We just want to make sure people do come home safe and those people who are out, we want them to be safe on the roads too,” said Officer Craig Murray.

The checkpoints are funded by a number of grants that expire at the end of September, so police said to expect a few more around the city before the end of the month.
