An Army sergeant is going to prison in connection to the shooting that almost killed her now four-year-old son.

She has pleaded guilty to everything except pulling the trigger.

The boy's father is originally from Tulsa, and said only his son knows for sure what happened.

Four-year-old Brayden's father, Brandon Phenix, said his son told police "my mama shot me with a gun," while he was at her home on Fort Huachuca in Arizona; but court documents show she is pleading not guilty.

“It is the worst phone call I've ever received in my life, that my son has been shot," Brandon said.

On July 13th, 2013, is when Brandon got that call from his now ex-wife.

The shooting happened while Brayden was with his mother, Sergeant Jennifer Onei, at Fort Huachuca.

Brandon said she didn't give him any specifics of how it happened.

Brayden has now had 12 surgeries and is constantly being monitored for infections.

“We live in and out of hospital. Anytime he has a fever we have to go to the hospital and stay for three to four weeks,” he said.

On top of caring for his son, Brandon said he is seeking the truth and wants to know exactly what happened that day.

Court records show Onei pleaded guilty to wrongfully storing a privately owned weapon on her on-post quarters without permission from her commander.

Onei also pleaded guilty to storing that weapon loaded, which is a failure of military safety procedures.

One charge Onei pleaded not guilty to was to shooting Brayden in the abdomen with a loaded firearm, even though that's what his father said he told police.

“He said that mommy shot me with the gun,” Brandon said.

We reached out to Onei and her attorney, along with the military prosecutor, but only got a voicemail.

“I spend most of my day trying to call the military. I've called time and time again,” said Brandon. “I won't stop until justice is had for my son.”

The current deal with the prosecution has Onei receiving no less than an 18-month sentence for the charges she pleaded guilty to.

Brandon claimed evidence showed no gunshot residue on the boy's hands and he claimed Onei has a history of lying.
