TU Football Takes On SMU On Military Appreciation Day

TU football will be taking on Southern Methodist University Saturday morning. The game kicks off at 11:00 a.m. at Chapman Stadium.

TU fell short by ten in their last game against the Memphis Tigers, losing 40-20. While Memphis improved their season to 5-3, Tulsa took a hit to theirs. The Golden Hurricane football team is now 1-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.

TU finished the first half of the game with 14 points on the board, and forced 215 yards. They got off to a slower start in the third quarter, only gaining 64 yards total in 20 plays. Although they held the Tigers to 77 yards and six points for two field goals, it wasn't enough to come out on top. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around Memphis was leading TU by 19 points, ultimately finishing the game with a ten point head over Tulsa.

SMU has been struggling a lot offensively and defensively, as their record shows. They haven't been able to get it together and win a game. Their offense hasn't been scoring much early in games, and their defense has been getting behind by missing tackles and assignments. They've recently changed coaches. This may contribute to the team's lack of efficiency on the field, compared to their play in previous years.

TU Head Coach Bill Blankenship said they will not underestimate the 0-7 Mustangs, but rather go into the game hoping the things they've been working on play out. He stated that underestimating an opponent, or overestimating yourself, is one of the biggest sins you can commit.

Since the game will be played on Military Appreciation Day, TU will be admitting all personnel with a valid military ID for free. Also, all fans who bring an unwrapped toy valued at $15.00, or more, to donate to Toys for Tots will receive free entry as well.
