MUSKOGEE COUNTY, Oklahoma -

A Muskogee man is out of the hospital after being shot during a convenience store hold-up. The man said he doesn't regret trying to be a hero.

C.J. Stout didn't go in the store looking for a fight but, when a man with a gun came in he felt something had to be done.

"I felt like I had to do what I had to do and, luckily, it turned out in my favor up to this point and hopefully everything heals," Stout said.

He took a beating, and a bullet, but is alive and talking.

Stout said he went into the Muskogee convenience store to charge his phone when a man walked in with a gun.

"He was obviously serious about his intentions, about getting some money, and he was going to do anything he could to get it," Stout said.

Stout said he initially went down on the ground, but felt like he had to intervene. He said he threw a display case of candy at the robber to get him to stop.

He said he remembers being shot in his shoulder and getting hit in the head by the robber's gun.

Tony: "Do you regret what you did?"

Stout: "Not at all, good will come out of it."

Stout spent less than a day in the hospital recovering.

Muskogee Police said he made a split-second decision to defend himself.

"From everything that we can see, he pointed the gun at the clerk and also pointed it at our victim, it's just unfortunate that he got hurt," said Muskogee Police Sergeant, Michael Mahan.

Stout said, "I'm just happy things turned out the way they did. There's other ways to go about it."

The robber is still missing.

Muskogee Police said he wore a rag over his face, but was thin, about 5-foot-8, possibly in his teens. He also had dark clothing with a possible 'Aztec style' design.

Surveillance video from the store could help catch the robber. They hope to release those images Friday.
