Dick Faurot's Weather Blog: Turning Cool, Cold, Wet For The Weekend

Posted: Updated:

Only time for a brief note this time.

Notice the first image which says a lot about how the last several days have been. Although we did not officially break any records here in Tulsa, it was close, and the warmth was certainly out of the ordinary.

For example, the 80 degrees for this Wednesday fell a couple of degrees short of the record for this date, but marks only the third time we have ever had 80 degree temperatures in Tulsa during the month of January, and it has been over 100 years since the last time it happened!

As you can also see from the max/min temperature map, courtesy of the OK Mesonet, it was a very warm day across the entire state. It was also windy as you can see from the maximum winds map which of course contributed to the fire danger.

A dry cold front will move across the state tonight followed by gusty northerly winds and a return to the real world.

Although temperatures will still be above normal on Thursday, the gusty northerly winds will make it feel even cooler, particularly in contrast to the last several days. Also, those gusty winds will once again contribute to an enhanced fire danger situation.

Fortunately, the winds will be much lighter for Friday going into the weekend.

The weekend still looks cold and wet, but the guidance continues to suggest just a cold rain for the most part. It should be starting Saturday morning and ending during the day Sunday.

There will be a window of opportunity for a changeover to a wintry mix before it all ends on Sunday, but current indications continue to suggest little or no accumulation and primarily for the more northern counties if anything does fall as snow.

That first full week of February looks to be more seasonal.

That's it for now. Stay tuned and check back for updates.
