Travelers Try To Beat Sleet, Snow Across Green Country

Posted: Updated:
VINITA, Oklahoma - A lot of drivers are changing travel plans because of the winter storm making its way into Green Country.

As soon as the precipitation starts to stick, that's when road crews will go to work. Plows already were out and on standby early Sunday evening.

"We're trying to stop where we need to and get out as soon as we can," driver Tasha Miller said.

The Will Rogers Travel Plaza in Vinita was one of many places where drivers fueled up before going back out onto the roads.

Miller and her family are heading home to South Central Missouri. She's been checking on road conditions all day.

“We've been seeing a few flurries as we go along the way, but we're trying... get there before it ices up," she said.

A lot of the truck drivers parked at the travel plaza know at some point when they get back out on the road, they're going to run into some of that winter weather. And all they're asking is that everyone they share the road with to give them plenty of space and slow down.

"You slow down... you slow down, take your time, give adequate following distance,” trucker Jerome Giannopoulos said. "Put the phone away. It's not that important... pay attention to what's on the road."

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority both are ready with their response teams, sand, salt and plows as usual.
