A Marine is recovering after a nearly-fatal rattlesnake bite.

2nd Lt Anthony Kemp was airlifted to OU Medical Center and rushed into surgery after the February 7 incident.

Kemp and two other Marines had just finished some testing in Fort Sill. The men decided to go for a hike in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge near Rush Lake.

A 6 to 8-foot long rattlesnake bit him in the calf, so severely doctors at OU Med had to amputate his leg officials.

Fort Sill officials said it could have killed the Marine and his two fellow Marines who carried him down the mountain are credited for getting him the care he needed.

He is still recovering and there are several Facebook pages set up so you can send your well wishes.
