TULSA, Oklahoma - Tulsa police say a boy died after being struck by an SUV. It happened in the 300 block of West 48th Street North Tuesday.

Police identify the boy as Jared Ber-Morgan.

He was getting ready to go to school around 8 a.m., according to Tulsa police.

A neighbor backing out of his driveway didn't see the boy, police say. Officers say the driver who hit the boy gives him a ride to school most mornings.

"Right now, our investigation shows that this was just a tragic accident," said Captain Steve Odom of the Tulsa Police Department.

Police identified the driver as Charles Jones, 27. Officers said Jones normally takes the boy and the boy's siblings to school when he takes Jones's younger brother to school. They said he normally stops at the neighbor's house and honks his horn. On Tuesday he honked his horn then backed out of the driveway, police said, and didn't know he had hit the boy until a neighbor told him.

Police say Jones agreed to take the state's blood test and was transported to OSU Medical Center.

It was a difficult scene for people in the neighborhood.

"When I came outside, he was already laying on the ground and the fire trucks are pulling up and everything," said Crissaundra Wilson. "They were working on him.

"It was disturbing," she said. "He didn't look good at all, but they tried."

A spokesperson from Tulsa Public Schools said the boy was a student at Bunche Early Childhood Development Center.

"As a father and grandfather, I am deeply saddened by the loss of this young 5-year-old boy, a student at ECDC Bunche," Superintendent Dr. Keith Ballard said in a statement released Tuesday morning.

"It is deeply affecting to all of us at Tulsa Public Schools. On behalf of students and staff of TPS, I would like to express our profound sympathy to his family and classmates at his passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they struggle to deal with this unfortunate loss."
