CANEY, Kansas -

The World Horseshoe Pitching Championship just finished in Topeka, Kansas. Not far from there, in Caney, lives Edith Ferrell, one of the top pitchers in the world.

"This is my world championship I just finished," she said.

Edith showed off a few of her horseshoe pitching competition shirts - when you are in one of the big national or international tournaments you gotta have one with your name on the back.

Meanwhile, her husband Bill created a makeshift horseshoe court so she could show me how it’s done.

"I usually swing it a little bit and let her go," she said, throwing a ringer.

Even though she’s only been at it for five or six years, she doesn't miss much.

After her by-pass surgery, the doctor told her to exercise, so she started playing.

She's competed in three world tournaments and four Kansas state tournaments - she won the Kansas tourney last year.

"I didn't know all this was out there for horseshoe pitching," Edith said.

She said there are tournaments all over the country, and at a typical Saturday tournament you might be pitching 200 horseshoes, which is where the exercise comes in.

The World tournament was three days.

"I pitched 600 horseshoes over the three-day period," she said.

She had a table full of patches, pins and other mementos of different events.

Edith also said you meet the nicest people pitching horseshoes.

"They'll have little things to pass out to ya when you compete with them. The lady from Georgia gave me this peanut," she said.
