Dick Faurot's Weather Blog: Another Chance Of Rain, Then Much Cooler

Posted: Updated:

The cool front that came through late yesterday brought some badly needed rainfall to this side of the state as you can see from the rainfall map, courtesy of the OK Mesonet. Some locations received in excess of 4” and, fortunately, the more S and SE corner of the state received some good rains this time around as well; they have largely missed out on the August rains, so these were certainly welcome.

The air behind this front was only slightly cooler and largely due to lingering cloud cover for the most part. Notice the max/min temperature map for today and compare it with the one for yesterday where the 90s of yesterday were largely replaced by 80s today. However, there remains plenty of moisture, as you can see on the dew point map from late this afternoon, where the dew point temperatures are holding in the 60s to around 70. That makes it a little uncomfortable for outdoor activities.

Very light winds tonight and generally fair skies, together with the abundant moisture, could produce some patchy fog to start the day Thursday. As the day wears on, light southerly winds and skies becoming partly cloudy should push our daytime highs back into the upper 80s after starting the day in the upper 60s.

However, a much stronger cool front will be pushing across the state by early Friday morning which will be followed by gusty N/NE winds bringing much cooler and drier air into the state. That will also be accompanied by a good chance of showers and possibly some thunder, but, they will be moving through rather quickly so rainfall totals should be much lighter than this last event - amounts on the order of ¼” or so with a few locations receiving more are generally expected.

As you can see on our forecast page, that will be followed by much cooler conditions through the coming weekend and should also set the stage for some great weather for the Friday night high school football games.

But, we still have some warm weather ahead of us, as a return to southerly winds for much of next week will result in temperatures running at or above normal once again. Also, any additional rainfall chances for next week look to be quite low at this point in time. Current indications suggest it may be awhile before we see another good cool front to bring fall-like conditions back to the state, and any shower chances look to be spotty at best.

In the meantime, stay tuned and check back for updates.
