City crews in Tulsa spent Monday clearing and treating roads in anticipation of the freezing temperatures and potential problems overnight and into Tuesday morning.

Salt trucks and snow plows were coming and going all day from the City utility yard, getting ready to treat the roads through the day and into the late evening hours.

They said it is a pretty big task, but they’re prepared.

The City of Tulsa has 64 salt trucks and more than 46 plows clearing and treating roads; and as crews get ready to tackle tough roadways, 10,000 tons of salt is shoveled and loaded into the trucks.

Their goal is to clear hills and bridges first, then, treat the main arterial streets with salt.

The city said, as long as the rain and wet weather holds off, they shouldn't have too many problems.

Tulsa Street Maintenance Manager, Tim McCorkell said, "This evening it is going to be more of a temperature drop and the roadway was moist so there are going to be slick spots. We will go ahead and address those with salt now since it’s not raining."

Crews will tackle 35 specific routes in town - roughly 1,720 miles of city roads.

Keep Up With Road Conditions Here

The city said this is their plan for now; and that if conditions worsen they will re-assess.

The city said they are planning for the crews to work through about 8:00 Monday night then take a break so they can be back on the road by 4:00 Tuesday morning.
