The Tulsa City Council is working on the future of the Chamberlain Community Center near 46th street North and MLK Boulevard.

Many councilors say the center is vital to keep kids out of trouble. They set aside extra money to hire more employees to make sure it stays open during the day, but we're told that didn't happen.

The parks department says there aren't enough people using the facility to justify a full staff.

Councilor Jack Henderson says there are people who want to use it, so he's fighting to prove its importance.

"There's nothing else in north Tulsa for young people to do,” Henderson said. “We need those rec centers -- those that tore down. I knew once we tore them down, they're not gonna build new rec centers. So any that still remain, we need to make sure we stand up as a community to say, ‘we need this.’"

The parks department plans to discuss the issue further with community leaders in north Tulsa.
