Charges Filed In Claremore Child Abuse Case

Prosecutors filed charges Tuesday against a Claremore couple accused of child abuse.

Taylor Mayfield, 25, faces two counts of child abuse by injury and one count of child neglect. Brittney Wallace, 23, faces two counts of enabling child abuse by injury and one count of child neglect.

The case began on Friday, May 13, 2016,when emergency room personnel at a Tulsa hospital notified police they were treating two children they suspected were the victims of abuse.

They told police the 11-week-old boy was being treated for a broken bone, hemorrhages in his eyes, a probable brain bleed and other injuries.

They told police the 21-month-old boy had a possible broken leg, burns on his feet and chest as well as bruises on many parts of his body including his genitals.

Police said Wallace, the boys' mother, had left them and her other son in the care of Mayfield.

According to court documents, Wallace said Mayfield did not hurt her children. But police said they found a text message on Wallace's phone from May 10, 2016, telling Mayfield that slapping around her 21-month-old son and marking him up had to stop. Another message told Mayfield to stop pinching the boy's private part, the documents show.

Mayfield and Wallace are in the Rogers County Jail.
