Elderly Sand Springs Woman Falls Down Well - And Helps Rescue Herself

Posted: Updated:
SAND SPRINGS, Oklahoma -

An elderly Sand Springs woman fell about 14 feet down a well - and helped rescue herself, according to Sand Springs Fire Chief Mike Wood.

Wood said the well is located inside a well-house at a private home on West 51st Street. It had a wooden cover over it.

"She's probably stepped on that cover 1,000 times, and this time it gave way," the chief said. The woman's son came to check on her and found her about 14 feet down the well which the chief estimated was about 40 feet deep. The son gave his mother a rope to hang onto and called for help.

When firefighters arrived a little after 8:30 a.m., they found her braced in an L-shape, holding onto the rope.

"She braced herself against the sidewall and was holding her legs against the other side, locking her knees," Chief Wood said. Part of her lower body was in the water which the chief thought was around 45 degrees.

Firefighters got a ladder down to the woman who "pretty much climbed out on her own," he said.

"She was 80, but she's probably in better shape than me, honestly," Chief Wood said.

Creek County Ambulance responded and checked the woman out. Her vitals were good with just a little elevated blood pressure.

"It could have turned out a lot worse," the chief said.
