OKC's Enes Kanter Receives Death Threats Following Failed Turkish Coup

Posted: Updated:

Following the failed political coup by a sub-sect of the Turkish military this week, Oklahoma City Thunder center Enes Kanter posted on Twitter that he's been receiving death threats. Kanter, 24, has been critical in the past of the regime of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and was excluded from the 2014 Turkish national team for what Kanter said were political reasons.

Kanter began posting screenshots of the death threats along with other political allusions comparing the current situation in his native country to that of Adolph Hitler's rise to power in the 1930s.

CBS News, citing Turkish media, reported this week that over 15,200 have been fired from various public positions in the wake of the failed coup. Ergodan is also reportedly arresting suspected members of the coup. On Wednesday, the Turkish government requested extradition of a Pennsylvania Turkish cleric they claim helped to orchestrate the coup.

Kanter has often been blunt and apparent with his opinions on a wide range of suspects, including former teammates, religion and politics.
