Students Need Help Completing Rafts For Race Down Arkansas River

Nearly 200 students at Tulsa Honor Academy are one step closer to floating their rafts down the Arkansas River for the Great Tulsa Raft Race.

But, with just 10 days until the float, there is a lot of work left to be done.

Step by step, the students make their way outside to begin the build; for the past few weeks, fifth and sixth graders having been doing the math, and noting the cuts, for one goal – floating down the river.

Verenice Garcia said, "Right now we are trying to calculate how much we would need from the material we have."

Eight classes are all building rafts for the Great Tulsa Raft Race; and while most of them have never built a raft, they say it’s an experience they won’t forget.

"It's extraordinary because this is the first time I've ever gotten to work on a project outside, with actual materials and tools," Garcia said.

Student Brandon Meraz said he takes every advantage to learn.

"Just trying to find out interesting facts about the world, learning about the human mind," he said.

The kids are taking the opportunity to build their rafts, but their wood piles aren’t exactly full.

“Any kind of plywood would be very beneficial," Ryan Atkins said.

On Saturday, the students and their families are coming to school to finish the rafts; if you’d like to help or donate some wood, they’ll be at the Tulsa Honor Academy at 2525 South 101st East Avenue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
