Police were involved in an overnight standoff with a man they say fired a shotgun at them. They took the man into custody around 7 a.m. Sunday. He has been identified Jack Lee White.

The standoff started after police got a call of shots fired at Stonecrest Apartments near 41st and 129th East Avenue around 2:15 a.m.

When police got to the complex, they found damage to at least one apartment from the shots fired. They said White refused to leave the apartment, so they called in a special negotiation team and SWAT.

Officers worked to communicate with him through a loud speaker, working to bring the situation to a peaceful end.  About 40 Tulsa police officers and members of the SWAT team responded to the incident.

Corporal Richard Meulenberg said they had information that the man was mentally unstable and possibly on drugs. White kept yelling "help" from the apartment and didn't seem to understand police were outside, one officer said.

An arrest report states he shot numerous times using a handgun and a shotgun. Shots went through a neighbor's occupied apartment.  At one point, he fired toward police.

"We didn't shoot at him even though he shot at us," said Corporal Richard Meulenberg, Tulsa Police.

They evacuated nearby apartments - two of which had damage from the man firing shots, Meulenberg said.

Finally, police launched gas canisters in the apartment that contained a chemical similar to tear gas, he said, and White came outside. A second man was found inside.

White appeared to be very distraught as officers handcuffed him.

No one was hurt in the standoff or arrests.

White, 32, was booked on complaints of assault with a deadly weapon, shooting into an occupied dwelling, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony and destroying evidence. He had a warrant out for his arrest for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Meulenberg initially gave a different name for the suspect, but that has been corrected by jail records.
