Tulsans Enjoy Easter Sunrise Service Despite Rainy Start

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

Sunday's rainy start didn't stop people from worshiping outside for Easter.

For the fourth year in a row, people gathered at the Guthrie Green for a sunrise service.

Gray skies and showers made it difficult to see the sunrise on Easter Sunday, but First United Methodist Church members Valerie and Paul Rose are used to it.

"Since they've started this tradition, we've been here every year. It seems like it's rained almost every year that we've been here," said Valerie Rose.

"Probably the funnest way to start Easter morning. It's low key, it's very personable," Paul Rose said.

The drizzle didn't distract anyone from the service.

"In a lost and broken world, it's a great reminder that this is not the end," Valerie Rose said.

The service isn't limited to just one church. Everyone was welcome to come out to the Guthrie Green.

Members of the First United Methodist Church, the Brady Heights Network and the Centenary United Methodist Church started their day huddled under the same roof.

"Everyone coming together as one in the city just to rejoice - it's great," said Madeline Jones, First United Methodist Church member.

No matter what the skies look like next year, the Roses plan to be back for another Easter on the Green.

"To celebrate Easter in the heart of downtown Tulsa is really kind of a treat," Paul Rose said.
