Local Cyclists Ride For A Good Cause In Sand Springs

Local cyclists raised thousands of dollars for a non-profit Sunday in Sand Springs at the 10th annual Palmer Sand Springs Criterium.

Hundreds of cyclists turned out May 21 to help women struggling with addiction. 

As cyclists made their way through downtown Sand Springs, they zip around corners for a cause. 

The races for all ages will raise about $20,000. 

Palmer Continuum of Care Executive Director Greg Sneed said there has always been addiction issues in Green Country and this money will help the nonprofit continue its mission to help women who are addicted to drugs and alcohol.

"At the women's center we had a 22 percent increase in methamphetamine last year, our all time high running 67 percent drug of choice for our women," Sneed said. "But our opioid usage is going up and up and up. And heroin is prevailing in Tulsa now also."

Joel Kantor is one of nearly 300 cyclists participating throughout the day.

He's back this year for his fourth year in the race.

"I'm quite honored and thrilled to be able to both race and support the program," Kantor said. 

The next event benefitting Palmer is a “Zumbathon” on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at Oklahoma Fit in Jenks.
