People are already setting up camp sites and heading to area lakes, but the threat of severe weather could put a damper on many holiday weekend plans.

Storms could pop up with little to no warning, so in addition to having fun, you should also take some precautions to keep your friends and family safe.

With an extra-long weekend ahead, the fun times are already rolling for people like Tyler Gilmore.

“Just out here having a good time, enjoying the water," he said.

Friday calls for sunscreen, but the weekend forecast calls for much worse - a little alarming for Gilmore.

"Just trying to stay positive, hopefully the rain passes us," he said.

Last Memorial Day, a storm popped up in Green Country - high winds and hail pummeled people on Skiatook Lake; some boats broke down and OHP was called to rescue.

Hopefully there isn’t a repeat of last year, so this year can be more about having fun for everyone at the lake.

Still, for veteran boaters, a constant check of the forecast is a must this weekend in case storms do flare up.

"Stay off the water and watch the forecast," Gilmore said.

Should the weather move in, the smart decision might be to end the weekend early.

"If it starts raining, we'll probably just pack up and head out," Eli Ortiz said.

Hopefully the dangerous weather misses us and everyone is able to enjoy a safe weekend.
