Dynamite Found In Cleveland Warehouse Building

Posted: Updated:
CLEVELAND, Oklahoma -

Emergency crews removed dynamite from a warehouse in Cleveland Sunday evening.

For several hours, streets in the 100 block of East Cherokee were blocked off.

According to Cleveland Fire Chief Ryan Murray, the owner of a building in the area was cleaning and found dynamite, blasting caps and detonating strings in the attic.

Fire officials say the building was used for oil field business. The company blasted wells and water lines about 50 to 60 years ago but the building has sat unused for last 20 years.

The dynamite could be 40 years old or more.

Murray: "It may be fizzled away by now, enough to where it's not dangerous.
Katiera: "But it could also be, on the flip side."
Murray: "It could still be crystallized and a little bit of movement could set it off."

Several homes around the building were evacuated as a precaution.

The bomb squad took the dynamite and will safely detonate it somewhere else.
