Semi Hauling Backhoe Damages Bridge On Highway 412 In Sand Springs

SAND SPRINGS, Oklahoma -

A Tulsa overpass has a lot of damage after a semi-truck hauling an oversized load crashed into it Monday afternoon.

An oversized truck carrying a track hoe took its chances but didn't clear the overpass on 412 East, sending debris flying onto the highway below.

Martin Stewart with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation said the damage from the truck was severe, bending the bridge beam so badly they may have to completely replace it.

But, their initial response was to shut down two lanes of the busy highway and the west lane of the overpass to make sure no one was hurt by excess debris that came loose.

"For the debris, it's very dangerous. We want to get up there and make sure everything is secure underneath the bridge deck and evaluate what kind of situation we have,” Stewart said.

All lanes of the highway were back open around 2:30 p.m.

The west lane of the overpass will stay closed for now as a precaution.

Stewart said a tow truck hauled away a few cars, but, as far as he knew, there were no injuries. He said no ambulances responded to the scene.

Stewart didn't know any specific numbers but said it could cost up to $100,000 to repair the damage.
