TULSA, Oklahoma -

Public Service of Oklahoma said they have reports of scammers targeting PSO business customers in McAlester, Broken Arrow and Weatherford.

The customer receives a phone call from someone claiming to represent the electric company. The scammer tells the customer to pay their bill immediately to avoid having service shut off, according to Stan Whiteford, PSO.

"The scammer tells the customer they must buy a pre-paid debit card and call back with the number.  Sometimes the scammers ask for money orders, credit card or bank account numbers," Whiteford said in a news release.

PSO will never ask a customer to buy a pre-paid card and phone in the number.
They only accept payment over the phone when the customer makes the call.

Common Signs of a PSO imposter:

  • Calling to demand payment within a couple of hours.
  • Insisting on a specific form of payment, such as a pre-paid credit card from a convenience store.
  • Asking for personal or account information.
  • Providing an unfamiliar 800 or 888 phone number.

Whiteford also said PSO employees will never knock on customer doors asking to be let in - and they never ask for money at a customer's home.

To verify that someone is actually a PSO employee, call PSO customer service toll free at 1-888-216-3523.
