MUSKOGEE, Oklahoma -

New businesses are flooding into Muskogee's downtown area, and people with the new Downtown Business Association say it's just the beginning.

Poppy's Garden has only been open for a couple months, but so far, the owner said downtown Muskogee has been an ideal location.

Born and raised in Muskogee, Meagan Ferren has lived in Tulsa, and even Portland.

But when it came time to open her own business, she decided it was time to come home.

"I always kind of wanted to get back to downtown Muskogee," Ferren said.

Ferren's floral shop is just one of several new businesses in the downtown area.

"There's an opportunity here with downtown growing so much, that I really just felt like this was the place for me to be," Ferren said.

Now that several businesses have gotten on board, Ferren said she hopes the domino effect will continue.

"There have been people that have kind of stepped up to the plate so it's started to get people excited about having those options downtown," Ferren said. "I think people in Muskogee really have a lot of pride."

The city is on board, too.

Ferren said she was given a grant to help fix the shop up.

Now, the Downtown Business Association is getting fired up to keep the ball rolling.

John Newby of Main Street Muskogee Inc. said it'll bring new life to the entire town.

"To attract jobs, you need a vibrant downtown," Newby said. "By bringing the heart and soul back to the community, when people come and look at Muskogee, they'll look at downtown, they'll look at Honor Heights, they'll look at those places and they'll see vibrancy."

Newby said the growth across Muskogee's downtown area will only continue to grow from here.
