VERA, Oklahoma -

A Washington County deputy shot a man Thursday afternoon after he attempted to stab a woman, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reports.

The shooting happened west of Vera just off 3900 Road about a mile west of Highway 75.

Earlier Thursday, deputies were called to assist a bail bondsman who had tracked a bail-jumping client to a pasture off Highway 75 and 3900 Road, according to a news release from OSBI.

When deputies arrived, the bondsman was trying to talk with Corey Wesley Peoples when Peoples retrieved a knife and put it to the throat of a woman who was with him, the OSBI said.

Deputies commanded Peoples to drop the knife. At some point, the woman fell to the ground, according to the OSBI.

When Peoples raised the knife to apparently stab her, a deputy fired his gun once, hitting Peoples.

Peoples was flown to a Tulsa hospital and is in stable condition.

Agents will prepare a report of the incident for the district attorney.

It is OSBI's practice not to release the deputy's name unless they are arrested or charged with a crime.

Neighbors said that area isn't necessarily quiet.

"We've had a few things. It's not the first situation," said Dee Inbody.

Inbody owns about 230 acres near the scene of the shooting.

"You don't see much traffic. We probably have four or five cars a day. This is the last road you can get through from Highway 75 and 11 without going all the way to Ramona," he said.

Inbody came as soon as he heard the news about the shooting because he was worried that the truck from our aerial video went through his fence.

"We just put the front fence in last year and we've still got some more to build, but that's what I was afraid of. I was worried about cattle getting out on Highway 75," Inbody said.

Inbody said after looking at the video, it wasn't on his property but it's better to be safe than sorry.

"I've had people break into my buildings up there. They cut the fences and break in," Inbody said.
