"Stray Bullets Are Coming From Everywhere," Say Some Concerned Sand Springs Residents

Posted: Updated:
SAND SPRINGS, Oklahoma -

People living in Sand Springs say they are fed up and scared.

Some people have been firing guns just across the river – putting their lives at risk.

The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office is taking the threat seriously and is immediately heading to the River Oaks mobile home park any time they get a shots fired call.

Gunshots, one after the other, is a daily occurrence that people living at River Oaks say is hitting too close to home, literally.  Homeowner Steven Horsley says he remembers an incident that sent people scrambling.

"We were running and ducking.  I mean, stray bullets are coming from everywhere.  It was just chaos.  We kept hollering to them to stop," said Horsley.

Tulsa County Sheriff Spokesperson Casey Roebuck says it’s pretty common to get shots fired calls in that area, as well as directly across the river.

Roebuck says TCSO “strongly advise[s] people not to shoot out there just because it could carry across the river."

According to Roebuck, for the most part, it’s not illegal to shoot guns in that spot, but it’s not the safest area to do so.  Just last summer a man was hit by a stray bullet near the mobile home park.  Neighbors say they're afraid that a stray bullet could kill someone.

"You're trying to sleep, and all you're hearing is gun fire,” said Horsley.  “You don't know if you're gonna get hit in the middle of the night."

"All you have to do is shoot a little over the target and you’re shooting at cars driving by," said area resident William Landrum.

Landrum lives on the other side of the river.  He wants people who fire guns there to go somewhere else.

Landrum says "if you want to shoot a gun, go to a shooting range or buy a piece of property where you can shoot a gun."

While the people shooting in that spot have not been accused of any crime, the Sheriff’s Office would like to be contacted if someone is being unsafe with a weapon.
