Nebraska Fugitive Arrested Following Hours-Long Standoff At Tulsa Motel

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

One man is in custody after a nearly 17-hour standoff with law enforcement ended Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the suspect, Rush Hembree, 49, barricaded himself inside a room at the Rest Inn and Suites near Admiral and Memorial. They said he also took his pregnant girlfriend hostage.

The standoff started around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday. Hembree was taken into custody around 3:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Hembree was taken to the hospital to be checked out because of the chemical agent he inhaled when police tried to get him out of the motel room.

For hours, Hembree was barricaded inside a second-floor room of the motel with his pregnant girlfriend. Police said her name has not been released because she was a victim.

Police said they knew Hembree was armed during the standoff but didn't know what kind or how many weapons he had.

Eventually Hembree released his girlfriend from the room, but he stayed inside.

“They caught him trying to exit the room by kicking the wall. He went back in the room, and at some point, he just realized, and that was very quickly after that, he realized that it was in his best interest to go ahead and give up,” Sergeant Shane Tuell said.

After throwing what police would only call an agent into the motel room they were able to take him into custody peacefully.

“That’s actually extremely good for him, and extremely good for us. That, even though his environment’s contaminated, he’s still alive and he’s still with us, and that’s exactly what we want,” Tuell said.

Police have not said what weapons they found inside the motel room, but court records show this isn't the first time Hembree has been caught with weapons.

According to court documents, Hembree is wanted on drug and firearm charges in Lancaster County after he failed to show up for a court appearance in Nebraska two weeks ago.

Documents show Hembree was arrested January 2017 in Lincoln, Nebraska. They say a machete, buck knife, sawed-off shotgun and 51 grams of meth were found in his vehicle.

Police said Hembree has a felony warrant out of Nebraska for making fully automatic weapons.

He now faces extra charges of kidnapping and resisting arrest.
