The body of a 13-year-old boy has been recovered from Deep Fork creek Friday afternoon in far northeast Oklahoma City.

The incident happened around 11:20 a.m. in the 17900 block of North Choctaw Road near Arcadia, Oklahoma City firefighters said.

We’re told the 13-year old was with another teenager at the time of the drowning.

“These two boys were playing near the river down here and possibly one of them lost a shoe, and so the child went in the water possibly to get that shoe,” said Benny Fulkerson, Battalion Chief OKC PIO.

Emily Roberts was the person to call 911. She lives in the area and was on her way to work when she says she spotted someone running towards her car.

“I was driving down the road, and a boy that I recognized as one of my neighbors came running out frantic. He said I need help, my friend is drowning. So, I said get in the truck, let's go,” said Roberts. “I was just trying to stay calm for him because I knew if we both were frantic and freaking out it would not be a good situation.”

Fire crews shut down Choctaw Road between Northeast 178 and Highway 66 as they worked the water rescue.

Fire crews were told the victim could not swim. He was found after being in the water for nearly two hours.

The other boy reportedly tried to save him, and while officials said he is not physically injured there’s a long road of recovery ahead.

“If you’re family and if you’re friends of the family, you need to show your love to these people because they are going to need it. It's never ever easy when you lose a child. It's hard when you lose any family member, but obviously when it's a child it is extremely tough,” said Fulkerson.

The dive team recovered the boy's body about 1:50 p.m. He has not been identified.

The Oklahoma Medical Examiner will now take over the case.
