'Wicked's' Glinda The Good Witch Teaches Julia Benbrook To Fly
TULSA, Oklahoma - Wicked, one of the most popular musicals, takes a look at what happened in Oz before Dorothy dropped in, and it’s now showing at the Tulsa PAC.
Ginna Claire Mason plays Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked and spoke with News On 6’s Julia Benbrook, and even gave her a behind-the-scenes lesson on how to fly in with style.
Julia: “So, tell me what are your favorite parts about this role?”
Ginna: “Well, I saw the original cast when I was 13 years old, so this is a lifelong dream come true - getting to fly in the bubble, and wear these costumes, and sing these songs. I've been on the road now for a year-and-a-half, so, to get to play amazing theatres, total dream come true.”
Julia: “Glinda is a little bit of a complicated character, give us a look into her mind.”
Ginna: "She's got a lot of layers, I think. She has a way that she likes to present herself, and then this green girl comes to school and, I think, really rocks her world and challenges her thinking and challenges her to make a change for good."
Julia: “And Elphaba says at one point, I think, ‘It's not everyone gets to come and go by bubble,’ is that the quote?”
Ginna: “We can't all come and go by bubble. But we can.”
Julia: “So, what are the keys here? This moment, if you come see this, she flies in and the whole audience just stops.”
Ginna: ‘It's definitely one of the more amazing theatrical moments because Elphaba, plot twist, also flies, and so it’s only fair that Glinda gets to fly too.”
Ginna teaching Julia to fly: “If you take note, there are four bubble machines surrounding your bubble, which means as soon as you start coming down the bubbles are going to start flying. They can fly into your mouth, into your eye, but you can knock them away with your wand.”
Wicked will be in Tulsa at the PAC until September 23 and tickets are still available.
Fun fact, the bubble that Julia got to use was built for Oklahoma's own Kristen Chenoweth to use at the Tony's one year. They now use it traveling across the country.
