Two or three years ago, Joey Wignarajah and Jacob Johnson got the idea Tulsa needed a new flag. They created a contest. There were 400 or more entries.
They felt Tulsa hadn’t branded itself very well. “There was a hole there that needed to be filled,” said Jacob Johnson.
The city just needed a simple symbol people could latch onto. A committee of artists and historians pared the entries down to three and thousands voted for a favorite online.
The winner was adopted officially by the city in October of last year. Six months later, it’s beginning to catch on. The new flag is flying from poles and front porches all over town.

“We accomplished what we wanted to accomplish, which was for people to have a way to show that they loved Tulsa … were from Tulsa."
Stores like Ida Red have adopted the design and it’s beginning to catch on.
