The Tulsa Home Builders Association continued a tradition Thursday that began more than 50 years ago. They took students from Ryal School in Henryetta on a Christmas shopping trip to Tulsa.
Here's the deal. Ryal Public School closes for the day and all 90 kids, Kindergarten through 8th grade, get bussed to Tulsa for a festive free-for-all in the toy department at Walmart.
Each child is given 50 bucks and a volunteer to help them shop. It's gone on this way since the 1960s.
“I've been Participating in it for over 30 years," said John Brawley.
He's the chairman and said for the first time they've got more volunteer shoppers than kids to shop for. Lisa Veltri went shopping with 5-year-old Kenlee. She described herself as an empty nester who misses kids at Christmas.
After the shopping, the kids go to the Home Builder headquarters for a big pizza party with Santa Claus.
