Grass fires in east Tulsa tie up highway traffic

A truck dumped hot coals along a three-mile stretch of a busy Tulsa highway sparking grassfires Tuesday afternoon.

It happened on I-244 in east Tulsa. The truck was hauling petroleum coal to the Port of Catoosa when the coal apparently burned through the side of the truck. That caused multiple grass fires.

One burned toward the Serenity Mobile Home Sales Lot, where there's more than a million dollars worth of inventory. LaDonna Hamilton with Serenity Mobile Homes: "The only thing we could get were little pieces of carpet was the only thing we could find to put out the fire. We had no water and stuff out there, so finally the fire department came."

No structures were damaged, and no one was hurt.

Fire officials say fortunately there was very little wind.
