OU linebacker on Bednarik watch list

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) _ University of Oklahoma linebacker Rufus Alexander is on the pre-season watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award.

The award is given each year by the Maxwell Football Club to the nation's top defensive player.

Alexander was All-Big 12 last season and led OU in tackles with 102. He also had five quarterback sacks, broke up nine passes broken up, two forced fumbles and an interception.

Tulsa linebacker Nick Bunting is also on the Bednarik watch list.

Twelve semi-finalists will be announced in October and the three finalists will be selected in November. The winner will be announced in December.
