Muskogee school superintendent resigns

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) -- Muskogee school Superintendent Kerry Roberts is resigning after reports of illegal expenses involving meals, plane tickets to San Diego and gifts.

Roberts says in a written statement that ongoing questions about the expenses interfered with his efforts to improve learning.

The school board accepted the resignation last night. It is effective Saturday.

The allegations include that Roberts spent more than 12-hundred dollars on meals for himself and guests and spent 16-hundred dollars at the Muskogee Country Club for a Christmas party for school board members and administrators. He was also accused of ordering the district to pay for plane tickets for his wife and the wives of two board members for a school seminar in San Diego.

Officials say Roberts has reimbursed the district 25-hundred dollars.

As part of the resignation agreement Roberts will receive severance pay and fringe benefits through December.
